A good 8-ball break is one instruction repeated well: hit the head ball dead full, with a level cue, at a speed you can control. Power is the least important variable. Where the cue ball lands on the apex decides how much of your effort reaches the back of the rack — and a loose rack swallows the difference before you get there.

What the break is actually trying to do
Two things, in order. First, satisfy the rule: a break is legal if you pocket a ball or drive at least four object balls to a cushion. Fail both and your opponent can accept the table or make you break again. Second, leave a table you can run: balls off the rails, an open centre, a cue ball you can see from.
Notice what is not on the list: potting the most balls possible. A break that drops two and clusters the rest on the foot rail is worse than one that drops a single ball and opens the table.

The rack matters more than your arm
Before you touch the cue, look at the triangle. Every ball must touch its neighbours. A millimetre of gap means energy has to cross empty space, so it reaches the ball behind late and diminished; three or four gaps and the back row barely moves. That is why the same player breaks beautifully on one table and feebly on another. Push the balls forward as a unit until the front edge is tight.
A tight rack at moderate speed spreads better than a loose rack hit as hard as you can swing. Fix the triangle before you fix anything else.

Where to put the cue ball
You can place it anywhere behind the head string — the line across the table a quarter of the way down from the head rail. Within that box, start two or three inches to one side of the centre spot. From dead centre a full hit sends the cue ball back up the table or into the gap the rack just opened; from a small offset you still get a clean full hit, but the cue ball has an angle to work with and settles nearer the middle.
Stand squarer than usual and lengthen the bridge to a hand-span: break speed comes from a longer acceleration, not a lunge.

Hit the head ball dead full
Everything good about a break comes from this. A full contact on the apex ball drives energy down the spine of the triangle and out into the back corner balls, the ones that reach the rails and come back into play. A contact half a ball off steers the delivery into one wing of the rack, and the other wing stays where you racked it.
Aim it like any straight shot: line up standing, get down on the line, do not adjust once you are down. Strike at centre or a fraction below with no sidespin — english costs accuracy through deflection and buys nothing here. And keep the cue level: an elevated butt drives the cue ball into the cloth so it hops, often invisibly, and meets the head ball at the wrong height.

Speed: eighty per cent, and no apology
Energy delivered rises with speed, but accuracy falls with it, and accuracy is the term being multiplied. At maximum effort most amateurs miss the full hit by a quarter to half a ball, which costs more spread than the extra pace provides. Seventy to eighty per cent is where the curves cross. To find your own line, break ten times flat out and ten at three-quarters, and count balls that reach a cushion.

Where the cue ball should end up
Centre table, standing still. From there you can see every ball and are nowhere near a pocket. A dead-full hit does most of that work by itself, transferring nearly all the cue ball’s forward momentum into the head ball. If yours follows into the wreckage, you are striking above centre; drop the tip and it will stop.
Most break scratches go in a side pocket, not a corner: an off-full hit leaves the cue ball travelling sideways with speed still on it. Fix the contact and the scratch mostly fixes itself.

The second-ball break, and when it is worth it
There is a recognised alternative: place the cue ball nearer a side rail and strike the second ball in the rack rather than the apex. Done well it drives a back corner ball toward a corner pocket. It is less forgiving, because the thinner contact turns a small aiming error into a large one. Learn the full head-ball break first.

How to practise it
The break is hard to drill in a bar: racking takes longer than breaking. What it needs is repetition — the same rack, twenty times, one variable at a time.
A simulator helps on one condition — the physics have to be deterministic, meaning identical input gives identical output. Otherwise you cannot tell whether the spread changed because of your contact or because the game rolled a dice. How do you break in 8-ball?
Place the cue ball behind the head string, a few inches off centre, and hit the apex ball of the rack as fully and squarely as you can. Use a level cue, strike the cue ball at or just below its centre with no sidespin, and stroke through at about eighty per cent of maximum power. A dead-full hit at controlled speed spreads a rack better than a glancing hit at full power, because energy that misses the head ball never reaches the back of the triangle.
Where do you place the cue ball for the break in 8-ball?

Power you cannot aim is not power; it is a scratch waiting to happen.

Why does my break not spread the balls?
The two usual causes are a loose rack and an off-centre contact. If the balls are not frozen together, each gap absorbs energy instead of passing it along, so the back row barely moves however hard you hit. If your contact is off the apex ball, the cue ball dumps its energy into one side of the triangle and the far side stays parked. Check the rack, then the contact, then worry about power.
How do you stop scratching on the break?
Aim for a dead-full hit on the head ball and strike the cue ball at or a fraction below centre with a level cue. A square contact kills most of the cue ball’s forward speed, so it squats near the middle of the table rather than following into the pack or drifting toward a side pocket. Elevating the butt or adding sidespin is what sends the cue ball wandering after contact, and wandering is how break scratches happen.
